similar to the forbidden city in china, the imperial city was built during the nguyen dynasty. most of the customs were similar to that of the chinese. the whole area is dominated by pine trees and is surrounded by a moat that follows the perimeter of the four walls. the flag seen in the picture flies from the flag tower facing the imperial city.
